Sexual Wellness

PT-141 (Bremelanotide)

A personalized approach to sexual wellness through physician-guided care.

Summary

Care that starts with a conversation.

Sexual wellness is an important part of overall health, confidence, and quality of life. It reflects the interaction of brain chemistry, hormones, emotional well-being, relationships, circulation, and general health — not physical intimacy alone.

Changes in sexual desire or arousal are common and can occur for many reasons, including stress, hormonal changes, aging, medications, underlying health conditions, and lifestyle factors. Because these concerns are often multifaceted, the most useful care begins with understanding the whole person rather than focusing on a single symptom.

PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a prescription peptide that works differently from many traditional sexual wellness medications. Rather than acting primarily on blood flow, it is understood to act on melanocortin receptors within the brain that play a role in sexual desire and arousal.

At Wave Wellness, every treatment starts with a comprehensive medical evaluation, an open conversation about your goals, and a personalized care plan designed around your individual health needs.

Understanding PT-141

A different approach to sexual wellness.

PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide that belongs to a class of medications known as melanocortin receptor agonists. Unlike medications that work by improving blood flow, it is understood to act on specific receptors within the central nervous system that play a role in sexual desire and arousal.

That distinction matters because sexual wellness involves much more than circulation. Desire, arousal, hormones, emotions, relationships, physical health, and brain chemistry all contribute. Understanding these differences helps you have a more informed conversation with your provider about which approach — if any — fits your situation.

The science

Sexual wellness isn’t only physical.

It is the result of constant communication between the brain, hormones, nervous system, circulation, and emotional health. Each plays a role.

The brain

Desire begins in the brain. It processes emotional connection, attraction, stress, mood, and sensory information — all of which influence sexual interest and arousal.

Hormones

Hormones such as estrogen and testosterone contribute to normal sexual function, though hormonal balance is only one piece of a much larger picture.

Circulation

Healthy blood flow supports the body’s physical response. This is the system most commonly targeted by traditional medications for sexual function.

Emotional well-being

Stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and poor sleep can all influence sexual desire and satisfaction.

Science made simple

Imagine sexual wellness as an orchestra. The brain is the conductor. Hormones, nerves, blood vessels, emotions, and physical health are the musicians.

When these systems work together, the orchestra performs in harmony. If one section falls out of rhythm, the overall performance changes. Rather than focusing on a single instrument, providers consider how the whole orchestra is functioning.

How it works

Acting centrally, not on circulation.

PT-141 works through the central nervous system rather than directly on blood flow. Here is the pathway it is understood to act on.

1

The brain

PT-141 acts within the central nervous system rather than on blood vessels — which is why it is discussed differently from therapies that work on circulation.

2

Melanocortin receptors

It activates melanocortin receptors, a group of receptors involved in regulating several normal physiological processes, including pathways associated with sexual desire and arousal.

3

Signaling

Activating those receptors is understood to influence signaling associated with desire and arousal, rather than producing a direct physical effect on tissue.

4

Brain–body communication

Those signals travel through the same brain–body communication the body already uses. Individual responses vary, and some people will not respond.

Approved use vs. other use. Bremelanotide is FDA-approved under the brand name Vyleesi for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder in certain premenopausal women. Uses outside that indication — including use in men — are not approved indications and remain a provider-led decision made only after an individualized evaluation. Not everyone is a candidate.
Is it right for you?

Every experience is different.

Changes in desire or arousal may be influenced by physical health, emotional well-being, hormones, medications, stress, sleep, relationship factors, or underlying conditions — including:

  • Hormonal changes

Questions

PT-141, answered.

What is PT-141?
PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a prescription peptide in a class of medications called melanocortin receptor agonists. It activates melanocortin receptors within the brain that are involved in pathways related to sexual desire and arousal.
Is PT-141 FDA-approved?
Bremelanotide is FDA-approved under the brand name Vyleesi for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in certain premenopausal women. Uses outside that indication are not FDA-approved. Your provider can explain approved uses and whether PT-141 has any role in your individualized care plan.
Is PT-141 only for women?
The FDA-approved indication is limited to certain premenopausal women. A provider may discuss other uses based on an individualized medical evaluation where appropriate, but those uses are not approved indications and are not appropriate for everyone.
How does it differ from medications that work on blood flow?
PT-141 acts within the central nervous system on pathways related to desire and arousal, rather than working primarily by increasing blood flow. These are different biological mechanisms addressing different concerns — not interchangeable options, and not ranked against each other here. Your provider determines what is appropriate for you.
Is PT-141 the same as hormone therapy?
No. PT-141 does not replace hormones and works through a different biological pathway than hormone replacement therapy.
How is PT-141 administered?
If prescribed, it is a self-administered subcutaneous injection. Your provider will review proper administration, timing, and how often it may be used, and will answer any questions before you begin.
Can it be part of a broader wellness plan?
Yes. Depending on your evaluation, your provider may recommend lifestyle modifications, address contributing factors such as sleep or stress, or discuss other therapies alongside or instead of PT-141.
Does PT-141 replace healthy habits?
No. Nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and emotional and relationship health remain the foundation of long-term wellness, and often contribute directly to the concerns people come in with.

Safety & clinical considerations

PT-141 (bremelanotide) is available only by prescription and is not appropriate for everyone. Reported side effects include nausea — the most common reason people discontinue treatment — along with flushing, headache, vomiting, and injection site reactions. It can cause temporary increases in blood pressure and decreases in heart rate, so it is not appropriate for people with uncontrolled high blood pressure or known cardiovascular disease. Darkening of the skin or gums has been reported with repeated use, and there are limits on how often it may be used. It is not recommended during pregnancy or nursing. A licensed healthcare provider must review your medical history, current medications, and blood pressure before treatment. Report side effects to your provider promptly, and review the full prescribing information provided with your medication.
